Marie Pinet de la Chenaye & Pierre Masse

Marie Pinet de la Chenaye
Biography
Marie Pinet de la Chenaye (variations: de la Chaisnaye, Pinette) had French origins.
- Birth: Born in France around 1624. Her exact place of origin and parents' names are unknown, as her marriage record does not mention her parentage.
- Ages recorded in the colony: 35 at her confirmation in 1659, 40 in the 1666 census, and 50 in the 1667 census.
- Migration: She migrated to the colony in 1643. Since the first document mentioning her is her marriage record from May 1644, and ships didn't travel in winter, she must have arrived by at least autumn 1643.
- Residence: She lived in Canada, New France.
Marriage
- Date: May 15, 1644.
- Location: Monsieur de Chavigny's residence. Both she and Pierre Masse were living with Mr. de Chavigny. The marriage was registered at Notre-Dame de Québec.

- Witnesses: Mr. de Chavigny, René Mézeray, and Charles Cadieu.

- Godmother to her granddaughter Marie Contantin on March 10, 1668, at Sillery.
- Godmother to François Fauque on September 21, 1669, at Sillery.
Death
- Date: She died between March 1, 1670 (the last document naming her alive) and September 13, 1673 (the date her husband entered a new marriage contract).

Notes on Errors and Unknowns
- Marie's Parents: Tanguay incorrectly named Marie as Pinel and the daughter of Nicolas Pinel. This is highly unlikely because Marie was said to be born around 1624, Nicolas married in 1630, and Marie was in New France before Nicolas arrived. Genealogist René Jetté states that Marie's and Pierre's origins are unknown and lists her name as Pinet.
- Pierre's Parents: There is no source naming Pierre Masse and Claudia Couste as Pierre's parents.
- Incorrect Birth Information:
- An unsourced birth date and location for Marie of August 10, 1624, La Rochelle, Manche, Basse Normandie, is geographically incorrect, as La Rochelle was in Aunis, not Normandie.
- An unsourced birth date and location for Pierre of October 24, 1621, La Rochelle, Aunis, Normandie, also contains geographical errors and disagrees with his age in all colonial records.
